Amish-Country Wisdom: Old-Fashioned Skills Worth Keeping
Living in Ohio's Amish country, we've learned that the old ways often still beat the new ones. Here are a few worth holding onto.
There's a reason people travel from all over to visit Ohio's Amish country. The skills here weren't lost to convenience — they were kept. Living among our Amish neighbors has reshaped how we homestead.
Work that gathers people
The barn raising is the famous example, but it's everywhere: canning bees, butchering days, harvest help. Hard work here is rarely done alone. It's a reminder that self-sufficiency was never meant to mean isolation.
Tools that outlast you
A well-made hand tool, cared for, can serve three generations. We've slowly traded disposable for durable, and we've never regretted it.
A slower clock
The seasons set the pace. There's wisdom in letting the work follow the light and the weather instead of fighting it.
You don't have to give up electricity to learn from these neighbors. You just have to pay attention.
